Choosing the Best Implant
The two most common types of breast implants available in Canada are saline breast implants and cohesive gel breast implants. Saline implants have been in use for more than 30 years and are the more popular of the two types. Cohesive gel implants are made from solid silicone and are a better choice for some women, though of the two types of breast implants, cost is more a factor with cohesive gel implants. Both saline and cohesive gel breast implants have advantages and disadvantages. We offer the following information to help you make the decision of which type is best for you. Of course, Dr. Lista will assist you in making the final decision as to which type of implant will provide you the best results.
The Advantages of Saline Breast Implants
Many of our patients from Oakville, Brampton, Mississauga, Toronto, and greater Ontario choose saline breast implants because they provide excellent results, require a smaller incision, and are much less expensive than cohesive gel implants. A saline implant is essentially an empty bag that is placed into the body through a small incision and, once in place, is filled with a saline solution to increase breast size. The saline solution is completely safe. In fact, it's the same solution we use when starting an intravenous drip. A big advantage of saline breast implants is that, because only a small incision is necessary, the residual scar is very small as well.
Saline breast implants are durable and, once in place, cannot be harmed by normal activities. Our patients from Mississauga, Toronto, and throughout Ontario who have saline breast implants include personal trainers, fire fighters, police officers, and fighter pilots. Deflation does occur rarely, usually because of a defect around the filling valve. The saline solution that leaks out is completely safe and is readily absorbed by the body. Because the average deflation rate is 1 percent in the first year, 10 percent after 10 years, and 20 percent after 20 years, chances are that a woman's saline breast implants will last a lifetime.
Should a saline breast implant deflate, replacement is relatively easy. Dr. Lista simply reopens the incision, removes the implant, and replaces it with a new one. The manufacturer fully guarantees saline breast implants, so cost is not a factor. Additionally, Dr. Lista will replace breast implants or address any complications after surgery at absolutely no fee to the patient.
The Disadvantage of Saline Breast Implants
While saline breast implants generally provide exceptional breast enhancement at a comparatively low cost, they do have a disadvantage. Dr. Lista usually places saline implants behind the chest muscle because this provides the most aesthetically pleasing results. Saline breast implants placed on top of the muscle can exhibit rippling, and this method increases the risk of capsular contracture, or squeezing of the implant by scar tissue. For some patients, especially very thin patients, a saline implant can be felt in the bra crease area even if it has been placed behind the chest muscle. This can give a ripply feel and appearance. This is not a common occurrence, however.
The Advantages of Cohesive Gel Breast Implants
Cohesive gel implants are a relatively new form of breast implants. They have been in use in Europe for more than 15 years and were introduced in Canada in 2000. Because these breast implants have a solid or cohesive silicone center, they cannot leak if they rupture. The solid texture of cohesive gel breast implants makes them less likely to produce the rippling effect that can be a problem with saline breast implants. There is also less chance that they will be felt in the lower bra area. Dr. Lista has developed a technique for inserting cohesive gel breast implants through an incision in the armpit so that the resulting scar appears as a natural fold in the armpit.
Because they have less chance of rippling and palpability, cohesive gel implants can be placed above the chest muscle. This is a decided advantage for women who have droopy breasts because implants placed behind the chest muscle require a breast lift, as well. Cohesive gel breast implants have a Velcro-like outer surface that give breasts lift in addition to an increase in size. As a result, for our Ontario patients who choose these breast implants, there is the benefit of avoiding the additional scarring associated with a breast lift.
The Disadvantages of Cohesive Gel Breast Implants
Though cohesive gel implants provide advantages over saline breast implants, they do have some disadvantages. The solid structure of cohesive gel breast implants requires a larger incision for insertion. The typical scar with cohesive gel implants is 4 to 5 centimeters long, while the scar from a saline breast implant procedure is 1 to 2 centimeters. Our Oakville, Brampton, Mississauga, and Toronto patients considering breast implants should also know that cohesive gel implants have a slightly higher chance of capsular contracture. Also, cohesive gel breast implants' cost is significantly greater than that of saline implants.
Dispelling a Breast Implant Myth
Many people have heard the myth that one type of implant is better than another. This is simply not true. We emphasize to our Ontario patients that breast implants, whether they be cohesive gel implants or saline implants, have properties that may make one type better for a certain patient. Very thin patients, for example, may achieve better results with cohesive gel breast implants. For many of our patients, both types of breast implants provide exceptional results. For these patients, the breast implants' cost may be a factor, so they choose saline breast implants. Other patients may prefer the texture of cohesive gel breast implants and choose them.
Dr. Lista advises all Ontario women thinking of having breast implants to think carefully and consider all their options before coming to a final decision. They should choose a surgeon who has extensive experience with both types of implants and who has the advanced skills necessary to provide optimal results.
