Candidates for Breast Reduction Surgery

Attaining physical comfort, even more than aesthetic enhancement, is usually the overriding goal of our patients who are seeking breast reduction. Women in Canada who have the surgery are tired of the restrictions on activities exceptionally large breasts impose and the unwanted attention they draw.

Dr. Lista usually does not perform a breast reduction procedure until a woman's breasts are fully developed. If the breasts have reached a size that is causing extreme discomfort, however, he will perform the surgery earlier. Women who intend to breast feed should not have the procedure.

The Consultation

Dr. Lista likes to see his patients at least two times before breast surgery is performed. For Oakville, Brampton, and Toronto, Ontario residents, our Mississauga clinic is a short drive away. For our breast reduction patients in Canada who live farther away, our helpful staff can help arrange convenient accommodations near the Plastic Surgery Clinic. We are located near many excellent hotels and restaurants, so the stay will be very pleasant. During the consultation, Dr. Lista will listen carefully to the patient's goals and expectations. He will fully describe the surgery and how it can help the patient. He will also discuss limitations of the surgery, and he will make sure that the patient completely understands the results that can realistically be expected. With advanced computerized digital imaging, he can demonstrate approximately how the final results will look.

If you are considering breast reduction surgery, Canada's Dr. Frank Lista would like to meet with you in a private consultation to explain both the aesthetic and the health benefits of having the procedure. Contact the Plastic Surgery Clinic today to make an appointment that fits your schedule.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

In breast reduction surgery, technically known as reduction mammaplasty, Dr. Lista removes fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts to make them smaller, firmer, and lighter. In the procedure, he can also reduce the circumference of the areola surrounding the nipple.

The entire breast reduction surgery takes about two hours and is usually performed as an outpatient procedure at the Plastic Surgery Clinic. If the patient prefers, the surgery can be performed at the Trillium Health Center (the Mississauga Hospital), where Dr. Lista is the chief of plastic surgery. Anesthesia is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist who stays with the patient from the beginning of surgery to the moment the patient awakens.

In the past, the most common way of performing breast reduction surgery involved an anchor-shaped incision that circled the areola, continued down to the bra crease, then continued horizontally under the breast. Dr. Lista pioneered an exciting new method that completely eliminates the horizontal incision for a much more aesthetically pleasing result. Dr. Lista has performed well over a thousand breast reduction surgeries using this revolutionary method, and he is sought-after as a speaker to describe his breast reduction technique to doctors in Canada and the United States.

Scars from most breast reduction surgeries circle the nipple, then travel down to and continue along the bra line crease.

In the new breast reduction surgery method, there is no scar under the breast.

During breast reduction surgery, Dr. Lista removes excess skin and, without separating the nipple from the breast, moves the nipple to a higher position. He removes breast tissue to reduce the size and weight of the breast, and often uses liposuction to refine the breast shape.

An article by Dr. Lista on breast reduction surgery appeared in a recent issue of the medical journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. To read Dr. Lista's article, please click here or on the Journal icon.

After the Surgery

After breast reduction surgery, the breasts will be bruised and swollen for a few days. Dr. Lista will prescribe medication to relieve any discomfort. The patient must wear gauze dressings over the breasts, and these will be covered by a surgical bra or elastic bandage.

After about a week, a soft support bra, which must be worn day and night for three to four weeks, will replace the surgical bra or bandage. After 10 days to two weeks, the stitches will be removed.

For a week or so after breast reduction surgery at our Canada clinic, the patient should rest as quietly as possible. Lots of reading and video watching are recommended for this period. If the patient has small children at home, she should arrange to have assistance in caring for them in the week following surgery. After two weeks, the patient can begin doing gentle exercises. No strenuous or upper-body exercises should be attempted for at least a month.

The New Look

The swelling and bruising will subside within a few weeks of the surgery, but the final results won't become apparent until six months to a year have passed. Hormonal shifts, weight changes, and pregnancy can all affect the size of breasts as they did prior to the surgery.

Because of Dr. Lista's revolutionary breast reduction technique, the remaining scars will be much less extensive than with traditional breast reduction surgery. Nonetheless, the surgery does result in conspicuous scars. These will fade over time to thin white lines, and their positioning makes them completely unnoticeable even when the patient is wearing a low-cut top.

Virtually all of our patients who have had breast reduction surgery are amazed and pleased with the results. There will be an adjustment period as the patient and friends and family become used to the new look. The patient will enjoy a much trimmer, fitter-looking figure and will find that clothes fit better and feel more comfortable.

The Risks of Breast Reduction Surgery

Dr. Lista's expertise and extensive experience with breast reduction surgery give our patients the assurance that any surgical risks will be kept to an absolute minimum. However, any surgery carries some inherent risk. Infection or reaction to anesthesia can occur. Some numbness in the nipples and breast skin can be expected after surgery. This will likely last about six weeks before fading and disappearing completely. However, some patients experience loss of feeling for a year or more, and with some patients, the condition is permanent.

Obvious, permanent scars are inevitable with breast reduction surgery, although they will be concealed by a bra or bathing suit. The nipples may be unevenly positioned, and the size of the breasts may not be perfectly balanced. Also, because many milk ducts are removed during surgery, the surgery may prevent future breastfeeding.
