Providing Mississauga and Toronto, Ontario Women the Breast Lift Option

Over time, the effects of gravity, childbirth, and breastfeeding can cause breasts to lose their natural firmness and perkiness. As the breasts begin to droop, often the areola becomes enlarged as well. For women whose breasts have lost their natural shape and have begun to sag, a breast lift, technically known as a mastopexy, can rejuvenate the breasts by restoring lift, firmness, and shape. The procedure can also, if necessary, reduce the circumference of the areola. Our Mississauga, Toronto, and other Ontario patients find that a breast lift enhances the figure, providing a more youthful and attractive appearance.

Dr. Lista performs about 150 breast lift procedures each year, making him one of the most experienced breast lift surgeons in Canada. His patients often remark how happy they are to achieve such soft, natural-looking results with their breast lift. For women whose breasts are small or have lost volume, Dr. Lista often recommends cohesive gel breast implants in addition to the breast lift. For our Ontario patients seeking a breast lift as part of a complete makeover, Dr. Lista can provide expert advice on our face lift, liposuction, rhinoplasty procedures, as well as such non-surgical solutions as BOTOX® Cosmetic.

The Breast Lift Consultation

If you have chosen breast enhancement with a breast lift, Dr. Lista will meet with you in a personal consultation before your surgery to thoroughly discuss the procedure and to make sure you have reasonable expectations for the results. If you are a patient from Mississauga or Toronto having a breast lift, he will ask that you meet with him twice, if possible. During your consultation, Dr. Lista will fully explain the procedure, and, using computerized digital imaging, can show you how a breast lift might enhance your figure. Dr. Lista will tell you that the best candidates for breast lift surgery have small, drooping breasts, although breast lift can be performed on breasts of any size. The only drawback to a breast lift with larger breasts is that the results may not last as long. A breast lift will not affect the ability to nurse, though pregnancy and nursing are likely to undo the results.

If you live in Oakville, Brampton, Mississauga, Toronto, or greater Ontario, a free breast lift consultation with Dr. Lista will help you decide if the procedure is right for you. Contact the Plastic Surgery Clinic today to make an appointment with our skilled surgeon.

The Breast Lift Procedure

A breast lift is typically performed as an outpatient procedure that takes about two hours. In the most common method, Dr. Lista makes an anchor-shaped incision that circles the areola, continues down into the bra crease, and then proceeds along the bra crease. Our Mississauga surgeon helped pioneer a new technique that eliminates the scar along the bra crease, resulting in a much more natural looking, aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Scars in most breast lifts extend around the nipple, down to the crease, and then along the bra line crease.

With the new incision method, there is no scar under the breast.

Once the incision is made, Dr. Lista removes excess tissue to lift and reshape the breast. He then repositions the areolas so that they sit higher on the breast, and, if necessary, reduces their circumference. If you have decided to have breast enhancement with breast implants in addition to the breast lift, the implants will be placed either under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle.

After the Surgery

After your breast lift surgery, you can expect your breasts to be bruised and swollen for a couple of days. Our Ontario patients report that a breast lift generally doesn’t cause severe pain, however. If you feel some degree of pain, Dr. Lista can prescribe medications to relieve your discomfort. Your breasts will be covered with gauze dressings, and these will be covered by an elastic bandage or a surgical bra. After a few days, you'll be able to replace these with a soft support bra worn over gauze. You'll wear the support bra 24 hours a day for three to four weeks. The stitches from the surgery will be removed at the Plastic Surgery Clinic after a week to ten days.

During the week following your breast lift surgery, you should stay at home and keep any activity, especially arm movement, to a minimum. This is a good time to catch up on your reading or watch those videos you've been saving. If you have young children, you should make arrangements to have help in the home during the first week. After about two weeks, you can begin gentle exercises. After a month, you can start more intensive movement.

It is normal to experience some numbness in your nipples and breast skin due to the swelling caused by the surgery. This usually subsides within six weeks, but may last a year or longer in some patients. In rare cases, it becomes permanent.

Your New Look

Dr. Lista strives to ensure that the inevitable scars from your breast lift procedure will be as inconspicuous as possible. The scars often appear as red, raised lines on and under the breasts for months. Over time they will diminish, and sometimes they fade to thin, white lines. Dr. Lista's skill in placing the incisions, however, means that you will probably be able to wear even low-cut blouses without revealing any scarring.

In addition, you should remember that the lift and firmness provided by the procedure do not last. The natural effects of time, gravity, and other factors will eventually cause the breasts to sag. If you choose to have breast implants to augment your breast lift, you may experience longer lasting results.

The Risks of Breast Lift Surgery

Dr. Lista's exceptional skills (he assisted in pioneering a new breast lift technique) and extensive experience in performing breast lifts help to ensure that the risks of breast lift surgery are kept to an absolute minimum. However, any surgical procedure carries some inherent risk. Adverse reaction to anesthesia can occur. Though rare, infection or bleeding can cause scars to widen. Dr. Lista will provide you specific instructions for preparing for your surgery and for care after the breast lift procedure. If you follow these instructions diligently, you will substantially reduce your risk of complications.
